I wrote yesterday and said I’d share a bit about the novel I have been working on for the last couple of months so here goes…
The small village of West Montrose is about fifteen minutes from my house. It’s a tiny village in Woolwich Township in the Regional Municipality of Waterloo in Southwestern Ontario. It’s the only village with a covered bridge, painted red, best known as the Kissing Bridge, built in 1881 and will now be on a postage stamp.
In 1947 there was a nasty murder-suicide in the village and our local paper, in 2017–70 years after the incident–ran the story as an interest piece because the memories still live on in the village.
Originally planned as my Serial Fiction for the Waterloo Region Rural Post I started writing a story based loosely around the relationships that are merely hinted at in the news story.
Not only did I fictionalize my version of the events leading up to this event I have also developed a storyline in the present taking place in the village of West Montrose… of course a love story but the creation of a fictional B&B but, naturally, using the bridge as the backdrop.
There are lots of hidden hints in the old house and our new owners find their own ways of piecing together the story!
With people still alive from back then, and old letters, bullet casings and diamond rings I’m trying to pull it all together into a story of love, infatuation, mystery, obsession and tragedy…
With a twist!
